Mayor Daley Speaks Out on Bill Ayers
STATEMENT OF MAYOR RICHARD M. DALEY of CHICAGO REGARDING SENATOR BARACK OBAMA’S RELATIONSHIP WITH BILL AYERS:
"There are a lot of reasons that Americans are angry about Washington politics. And one more example is the way Senator Obama’s opponents are playing guilt-by-association, tarring him because he happens to know Bill Ayers.
I also know Bill Ayers. He worked with me in shaping our now nationally-renowned school reform program. He is a nationally-recognized distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois/Chicago and a valued member of the Chicago community.
I don’t condone what he did 40 years ago but I remember that period well. It was a difficult time, but those days are long over. I believe we have too many challenges in Chicago and our country to keep re-fighting 40 year old battles."
BILL AYERS SPEAKS OUT ON EDUCATION IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY
The name Bill Ayers strikes fear in the hearts of Republicans who spout his name as if he were Attila the Hun. In fact, Bill Ayers was a hero to many in the 60s and 70s. America was involved in an illegal and immoral war that had taken the lives of over 55,000 Americans. The country was overwhelmingly opposed to the Vietnam War but the government would not listen. Ayers was an idealistic young man whose group bombed recruiting stations and government buildings in the middle of the night as a protest. He killed nobody and was never convicted of a crime. Here he is today in 2008, a respected college professor, speaking to a class about education in America. Hardly a threat to anyone.
JOHN McCAIN'S LINKS TO DOMESTIC TERRORISM
John McCain's Domestic Terrorism Problem (new video)
When it came to fighting violence against abortion clinics, John McCain put his radical "pro-life" politics first -- putting women and their doctors at risk:
Here's how the New York Times summarized the legislation John McCain voted against (not just once, but twice):
"The Senate voted overwhelmingly today for a Federal law to prohibit bombings, arson and blockades at abortion clinics, and shootings and threats of violence against doctors and nurses who perform abortions.
The vote was 69 to 30. Twenty-eight senators who voted against Federal financing of abortions six weeks ago supported the measure, seeing it as a law-and-order matter rather than as an abortion issue.
As you can see, McCain was one of a distinct minority of radical "pro-life" senators. A number of senators who opposed abortion nonetheless voted for the legislation because they thought it would protect women and their doctors. It was only the extremists who opposed the bill -- and McCain was one of them.
One important detail about this legislation is that it was a standalone bill. In other words, McCain was opposed to this particular policy; he can't say that he opposed the bill for some unrelated reason.

John McCain's Connection to Financing International Terrorism
McCain's terrorist connections are not limited to just the domestic front. One of John McCain’s biggest fundraisers “oversaw the payment of roughly $1.7 million to a Colombian paramilitary group that is today designated a terrorist organization by the United States.” HuffPost reports that Carl Lindner, the former CEO of Chiquita Brands, “paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (known by the Spanish acronym AUC),” which is described by George Washington University’s National Security Archive as an ‘illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country’s most notorious civilian massacres.’” There is more, much more!
John McCain sat on the board of a very right-wing organization. It was the U.S. Council for World Freedom. It was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub, who wound up involved in the Iran-Contra scandal. It was an ultraconservative right-wing group. The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981, when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League, the parent organization, which ADL said, “has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and Anti-Semites.”
